women's health
Middle-aged women need to get or stay active by age 55 to enjoy a better quality of life as they age, according to research published Thursday.
Australian researchers followed 11,300 women in their late 40s to early 50s for 15 years. Women fit into one of her three categories. She exercised at least the recommended 150 minutes a week. They didn't exercise for very long at first, but they started exercising when they were 55, 60, or 65 years old. Or you've never exercised that much.
Quality of life was assessed with physical health and mental health scores calculated from a survey containing 36 questions about functional health and well-being.
Study authors found that women who consistently exercised 150 minutes per week and who began reaching fitness standards at age 55 had lower physical health scores on average than women who did not meet physical activity guidelines. reported that it was 3 points higher.
“Our research shows that it is important for women to remain active throughout midlife to reap the greatest benefits to their physical health in later life. Ideally, women should stay active until age 55. “Activity levels should be increased to meet the guidelines,” the authors wrote in the study published in the journal PLOS Medicine.
Researchers found that the impact of physical activity on physical health scores was “significant” even when accounting for socio-economic factors and pre-existing health conditions.
However, there was “no significant association” between physical activity and mental health scores.
According to the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, adults should aim for 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity and two days of muscle strengthening per week.
Moderate-intensity activities are characterized as exercises that allow you to speak but not sing the lyrics to your favorite song.
Examples include walking briskly, participating in water aerobics, riding a bike in an area with no hills, playing doubles tennis, and mowing the lawn.
This activity does not have to be done all at once. It can be completed in 30-minute intervals, 5 days a week, or in short bursts.
