BELLINGHAM, Wash. (MyBellinghamNow.com) – If you've been following the recent news about ski-to-sea racing and are looking forward to seeing racers competing across Whatcom County, you'll find some early racing action this weekend.
Registration is now closed, but this year's Junior Ski to Sea Race will be held on Saturday, May 11th at Mount Baker Ski Area and Lake Paden Park in Bellingham. The Junior Ski to Sea Race is a multi-sport relay race for children aged 8 to his 18 years. The ski/snowboard leg starts at 9 a.m. at Heather Meadows in Mt Baker. Racers will hike to the top of “7 Hills” and then ski or snowboard down to Chair 2. It's a shorter route than the one for adults, but still daunting.
Racers then hop in their cars and drive back to Bellingham, with the remainder of the race taking place at Padden Lake. The running leg begins here at noon. Runners then move on to the mountain bike section, riding 4.2 miles around Padden Lake. The race ends with the kayaker paddling his one mile across the lake. Start times will vary slightly depending on the division, but young racers are encouraged to come and support them.
