Stories from environmental lawyer and Cal Poly Humboldt University professor Jen Marlow's work supporting the Inupiat people of Kivalina, Alaska, and leading a pre-emptive relocation from barrier islands in the Chukchi Sea. Marlowe teaches environmental law at the University of California, Humboldt. She previously worked as an environmental attorney in Anchorage. She leads several environmental organizations and projects, including Three Degrees Warmer, a climate justice nonprofit, and Re-Locate, a research collective that partners with Alaska to support village relocation plans. came.

Life Plan Humboldt will host a free community forum on May 22nd from 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm in the Gene Lucas Center Grove Room, 3000 Newburg Road, Fortuna.
This is your chance to learn about Life Plan Humboldt and have your questions answered. LifePlan Humboldt will include 144 independent living cottages and apartments for active seniors in McKinleyville, with on-site assisted living and memory care. It will also include 40 to 50 affordable nursing homes.
The project is currently in the design development stage, with construction expected to begin in 2026.

Queer Humboldt will perform “Gender 101” on May 25 from 2 to 5 p.m. at Da Gou Rou Louwi' Cultural Center, 417 Second St., Suite 101, Eureka.
Participants will learn basics such as gender diversity, pronoun usage, and what to do if you make a mistake.
Genryu Walk
Those interested in the plants of Headwaters Forest Preserve near Eureka can learn more at a free guided walk on the Elk River Trail on June 1 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Pre-registration is not required.
Scott Estepa, an ecological engineer with the BLM Arcata Field Office, will lead the group along a 2.5-mile route, stopping to discuss plant species. The hike offers moderate elevation gain. Participants can end the walk early and return to the trailhead if they wish. Participants should dress appropriately for the variable coastal weather conditions.
To reach the walking site, take the Elk River Road exit from US Highway 101 at the south end of Eureka. Turn right onto Elk River Road and drive approximately 9 miles to the Elk River Trailhead parking lot.

The Humboldt Bay Boating Association will host a free “Learn to Boat” day on June 8th. The public is invited to attend this event that introduces beginners to the joys of boating.
After a brief technical introduction, participants row around Humboldt Bay in an Olympic-style eight-oar racing shell.
Space is limited and advance registration is required. We welcome adults and youth ages 12 and up. Participants under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Online registration will begin on May 18th at www.hbra.org. Each session takes approximately 2 hours. Early morning slots are more likely to have calm water.
The Humboldt Bay Boating Association boathouse is located on the Eureka Waterfront near Samoa Bridge. Look for the oarsman mural by artist Ben Hegrall on the building. The physical address is 1063 Waterfront Drive, Eureka.
