Welcome to the weekly Port City Life newsletter brought to you by me, Star News reporter John Staton.
It's already been an eventful week, and it's only Thursday. Last night I was at Waterline Brewing for a party celebrating the opening of the North Carolina Black Film Festival. Wilmington's DJ RizzyBeats spins cuts from Wu-Tang Wednesday, and tonight's festival opening film is his Wu-Tang Clan concert documentary – a portrait of the local hip-hop scene.
Afterwards, we drove to the Sandspur Restaurant in Carolina Beach, which has recently been hosting some great live music. C. Albert “Clark” Blomquist, formerly of the band Kingsbury Manx, performed some great songs with wordplay inspired by classic country hits.
