The Ganges River is said to be one of the most auspicious rivers in the country as it is believed that the Goddess descends to earth to bless the devotees on the day of Ganga Saptami, hence the Goddess Ganges is worshiped on this auspicious day. According to Hindu mythology, Gangadassera is the day when the Ganges River descended to earth. Lord Shiva grabbed her by the hair to stop her from washing the earth and soften her violent descent. Ganga was then freed by Lord Shiva, allowing her to carry out her mission of purifying the cursed souls of Bhagiratha's ancestors.

On this day, devotees start their day early by taking a sacred bath in the Ganges River. The diya is then lit and flowed downstream. They also gift sweets and garlands to Goddess Ganga. A special aarti is performed in the evening to seek blessings from Goddess Ganga. Deep Her Daan is the name of the night ritual where people offer diyas to Goddess Ganga. The poor and needy receive donations of clothing, food and water. Devotees chant the mantras 'Panchakshari' and 'Maha Mrithunjaya' while sitting on the banks of the Ganges.
