marsh tour
Friends of the Arcata Marsh will sponsor free tours of the Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Refuge on Saturday.
Participants will meet leader Sharon Levy at 2 p.m. in the lobby of the Interpretive Center on South G Street for a 90-minute walk focusing on birds, wastewater treatment, and wetland history. This event will be held rain or shine. For more information, call 707-826-2359.
dance party
The dance, featuring live music and a “great floor,” will be held Monday from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at the Moose Lodge, 4328 Campton Road in Eureka. Admission is $9.
Plant and craft sales
Dow's Prairie Grange No. 505 will hold a plant sale and craft fair on May 18 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Grange Hall, 3995 Dow's Prairie Road, McKinleyville.
The hall is filled with food, handmade crafts, and handmade items that can be purchased directly from the artists. Additionally, there will be plants available for purchase. This event is free and benefits Grange Hall. The kitchen is open for lunch.
speaker series
The Da Gou Rou Louwi Cultural Center's Speaker Series continues with its program titled “Reclaiming Place Names Douwa dat?” “(Where Are You?)” was held May 18 from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. at the Center, 417 Second St., Suite 101, Eureka, with linguist Linnica Butler.
Mr. Butler will speak about the importance of place name reclamation and the Wiyot Language Bureau's place name mapping project.
mini masters
The Humboldt Arts Council will host a Mini Masters Workshop at noon May 19 at the Morris Graves Museum of Art, 636 F St. in Eureka.
Join your family together for this free monthly art-making workshop to complement your monthly read-aloud book. The project is aimed at children ages 2 to 5, but children of all ages are welcome.
The program on May 19 will focus on the wonderful world of bees with the help of Kristen Hall and Isabelle Arsenault's book “The Honeybee.” After story time, parents and children can visit the art activity station together and create their own little masterpieces with the help and guidance of art educator Genevieve and his wife. At the end of the event, each family will receive a free children's book.
summer camp
Registration is now open for the Cal Poly Museum of Natural History Humboldt Youth Summer Camp.
The camp is for children ages 6 to 9. All camps include themed art projects, hands-on exploration of materials, story time, research practice, and many games.
June 24-28: Practice animal tracking as you “jump, slither, and run” with live reptiles and amphibians and learn about different animal careers.
July 8th to 12th: “Natural Science Explorers”. Dive into marine science, learn how to use a telescope, put on a puppet show, and learn what different kinds of scientists do.
From July 15th to 19th: “Our Familiar Friends, Birds and Dinosaurs”. Pick up an excavation cake, look at real fossils like a paleontologist, and touch a live chicken.
