math festival
The Humboldt Math Festival will celebrate its 15th annual “Celebration of the Mathematics Community” on Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. at the Adorni Center, 1011 Waterfront Drive in Eureka.
The free festival explores science, technology, engineering, art, and math, and features hands-on fun like puzzles, games, contests, demos, craft activities, and more. All ages are welcome to participate.
Speakers will include educators from local schools as well as the College of the Redwoods and the University of California, Humboldt. Students from Academy of the Redwoods, Sunny Brae Middle School, Fortuna Middle School, Arcata High School, and Cub Scout Pack 95 will share craft and hands-on activities.
Also participating will be representatives from Cal Poly Museum of Natural History, Redwood Discovery Museum, Humboldt Library, Green Diamond Resource Company, First5 Humboldt, Canopy Offshore Wind, and Kinetic Universe. The pancake breakfast will be served at Freshwater Grange, 48 Grange Road, Freshwater, from 8am to 11am on May 5th.
The menu includes buttermilk and whole-wheat pancakes, ham, sausage, scrambled eggs, apple compote, orange juice, tea, and French roast coffee. Top the eggs with homemade salsa and cheese.
Encounter of weavers
The Humboldt Hand Textile Spinning Guild will be held at the Wharfinger Building, 1 Marina Way, Eureka, on May 9th from 7 to 9 p.m. This event is free and open to the public.Refreshments will be served at 6:45 p.m.
Janice Sullivan will present a program titled “Weaving a Life.” She will share the history of her own work, including large wall pieces that explore double weaves and multi-tensioned fabrics. Her other works in the exhibition display a variety of woven structures and also incorporate painted warp, double weave, and Theo Moormon techniques.
Sullivan has been a textile arts student and educator for 40 years. Her work is displayed in many corporate and private collections locally and nationally. She currently teaches workshops through Pacific Textile Arts in Fort Bragg.
book club
Forest Defense Book Club will be held at the UC Humboldt Library on May 21 at 7pm (meet in front of the library).
Members meet once a month to discuss books that help them learn and imagine land defense topics together. Everyone is welcome. This month's book club will be discussing chapters 1 and 2 of The Ghost Forest by Greg King. For more information, please email humboldtforestdefense@proton.me.
