After a successful 12 weeks for participants, Sport Whanganui and Nga Tai O Te Awa concluded the challenge with spot prizes and a community walk around Springvale Park.
Over the past 12 weeks, Green Prescription Sport Whanganui and Ngā tai o te Awa have provided an avenue to improve the health of the community through the Lifestyle for Life 12 Week Challenge.
Over the course of 12 weeks, participants were provided with a variety of opportunities, activities, and information with the goal of transcending challenges and creating positive lifestyle changes that can be maintained throughout daily life.
“The Lifestyle for Life 12 Week Challenge aims to explore the different aspects of living a healthier life in the long term. The physical, mental and emotional aspects of their journey , focuses on the spiritual Wailua aspect and provides Kete with the tools to achieve their goals,” says Darren, one of our coordinators.
Each participant underwent a baseline health assessment, including an InBody bioscan, participated in a health challenge, attended an information session with a guest speaker, a cooking session at UCOL, and a mindful dance movement session.
A major component of this challenge was heart health. Raising awareness of the FAST message through support of the NZ Stroke Foundation was a key part of the 12 Week Challenge.
The acronym FAST stands for Face Arm Speech Take Action and is a set of four key points for people who have suffered a stroke to take action to give themselves the best chance of recovery.
Stroke affects people of all ages, but in Aotearoa New Zealand, around 30 per cent of strokes occur in people under 65, and Māori and Pacific whānau people are more likely to experience stroke than other Kiwis. 1.5 to 3 times more likely to experience
Up to 75% of strokes are preventable, and you can reduce your risk by maintaining a healthy diet and weight, getting more exercise, reducing your salt intake, and not smoking or vaping.
