Whatcom County, Wash. (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Looking for something fun to do this weekend? This week's Lifestyle Lookout has you covered.
Bellingham Beer Week starts this week and runs through April 28th. Beer, and more specifically brewing, is a huge part of the culture and economy of Whatcom County and the Pacific Northwest. We have lots of fun activities planned for next week to celebrate all things beer. Let's take a look at a few.
A “Reefer Release Party” will be held on Saturday, April 20th at Structures Brewing in Bellingham's Old Town neighborhood. Structures will also be offering specials to coincide with the release of the new Reefer IPA, including four burgers for $20 and a Hot Cheeto Chicken Sandwich. It's a big, hoppy India Pale Ale with a dank aroma that's made people love it and hate it over the years. Let's be honest, these humid IPAs aren't for the faint of heart, but if you've never tried them, your quest to conquer mighty hops isn't complete.
Next Saturday, K2 will host the 6th Beer Olympics. Head over to his second Kulshan Brewing location on Kentucky Street from 2pm to 7pm to watch 22 teams compete in eight Beer Olympics games. It's not all about beer-drinking skills, though, as prizes are awarded for the best costumes and team names. If you look up “fun'' in the dictionary, you'll definitely find “Beer Olympics.'' Find out for yourself.
There are too many events to mention during Beer Week, but let me mention just one more. On Wednesdays from 4pm to 9pm, Otherlands Beer in the Sunnyland neighborhood will host its iconic Kölsch Night. Kölsch happens to be the humble narrator's favorite beer his style. An easy-drinking lager ale with refreshing and bright notes that finishes sweet and bitter on the tongue. Like many aspects of German beer culture, it's all about the experience. The kind staff at Otherlands goes around pouring 0.2L of Kölsch until you signal that you're full by placing a coaster on top of the glass.
Sure, it's a lot of fun, but be safe and make plans to drive home after enjoying all the festivities during Bellingham Beer Week. For more information, visit bellinghambeerweek.com.
What is a cemetery tour like? BellingHistory offers walking tours of Bayview Cemetery monthly from May through October. The first leg of the tour is this Saturday. You can also explore the history of this cemetery, founded in 1887, visit the older sections and check out the most interesting monuments. On this 2-hour tour of his, you'll learn about the interesting people buried at Bayview. If you like this, get your tickets and register online at bellinghistory.com.
This week's featured live music event will be at Shakedown in downtown Bellingham.
Johnny West, who appeared on the hit TV show “American Idol,” will bring his brand of dreamy pop music to downtown Bellingham on Sunday night. If you like mesmerizing melodies and catchy beats, this is the show for you. Jonny West will perform with singer-songwriter Savannah Woods at 8 p.m. sharp. Tickets for this performance are only $10, and like Shakedown's other shows, this is his 21st night. For more information, visit shakedownbellingham.com.
