“My father is the one who got me into lifting and he was always passionate about training. We spent a lot of time together in the gym and it helped me develop good habits and motivate me to go to the gym. It really helped me increase my fitness. At first I didn't really like it, but after a while I started enjoying it and eventually started spending as much time as possible in the gym. Although I do a lot of sports , working out is a great way to get better at your sport, and it also helps you stay in shape and live a healthy lifestyle.I usually train at Lifetime Fitness, and they have a lot of equipment. I love the atmosphere and the swimming pool is also a great perk. I really enjoy the gym because it's so easy to see my progress and see myself getting better.”
Senior Waylon Schenk plans to continue his powerlifting career during college.
“I spend a lot of time training in the weight room at Mill Valley. It's one of the best gyms in our area, especially for a school gym. I started lifting because of soccer. It was a catalyst, especially since Coach Burns taught me how to lift and always pushed me to get better. That's why I believe I've stayed consistent. I love watching myself progress and it's so fun to see myself continue to progress. Also, getting the lift offer from William Jewell has inspired me to work harder and push myself even more. Working out has changed my life from helping pay for some of my college tuition to improving my overall mental health. Lifting has really changed my outlook on life. From now on I highly recommend it to anyone looking to start working out.”
Senior Madeline Valmke continues to improve herself in the gym after playing tennis.
“I go to Genesis Health Club in Overland Park. I became a member after I started playing tennis at Genesis in Merriam. I like the gym for its environment, equipment, amenities, and overall atmosphere. My favorite part during a workout is my back or legs, depending on how I feel. Those are my strongest muscle groups and I always feel great after I'm done, so I like them the most. I love working out. I work out because it's not only good for my physical health, but it's also very important for my mental health. I love working out, using my body in any form and being active. Spending time in your life makes you feel stronger and happier. Being spontaneous and pushing your limits challenges you to be the best version of yourself and allows you to grow spiritually. .”
Sophomore Garrett Cox enjoys working out 6 out of 7 days a week
“I enjoy lifting, which is why I attend iRISE Performances Monday through Saturday. Dedication is key to achieving your goals. Usually I go with at least one other person, I like to talk to someone in between and it makes the experience more engaging. My favorite thing about the gym is chest and back day because the workouts are so much fun and I always love how I feel afterwards. Going to the gym makes my body stronger because each time I exercise, I tear up individual muscle fibers. Every time I do it, my body repairs my muscles and makes them bigger and stronger. Everyone does something like I think it's important to exercise in the form of exercise because it has a positive impact on your health, both mentally and physically.”
