Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has made an urgent appeal for more weapons to avert a “catastrophic” situation in Europe.
Zelenskyy told an international conference in Germany that an “artificial shortage of weapons” would only help Russia.
Ukraine's military is running low on ammunition as vital U.S. aid is blocked by former President Donald Trump's allies in Congress.
Zelenskiy said he was ready to tour the front lines with Trump.
“If Mr. Trump comes, I am ready to go to the front lines with him. What does that mean? A real war, a real war, not an Instagram one,” the Ukrainian president said.
President Joe Biden assured Zelenskiy during a phone call Saturday that the United States is committed to supporting Ukraine's fight against “Russia's brutal aggression,” according to a White House statement.
Biden also said earlier in the day that “as a result of Congressional inaction, the Ukrainian military was forced to withdraw from Avdiivka after dwindling supplies forced the Ukrainian military to ration ammunition, resulting in Russia being forced to retreat for months.” “For the first time in our history, we achieved remarkable results.”
President Zelenskiy said in a post on X (formerly Twitter) that the two leaders discussed the current situation on the front lines.
“We appreciate President Biden's full support,” he said, adding that he hoped Congress would make “wise decisions” in approving the stalled Ukraine aid package.
US Vice President Kamala Harris has previously reiterated her support for Kiev.
At a joint press conference with Zelensky at the Munich Security Conference, he said the United States “cannot play political games” over military aid.
The meeting of world leaders and senior defense officials comes a week before the second anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
The president told the delegation that Ukraine's efforts are “limited only by the adequacy and range of our forces.”
“Maintaining Ukraine's artificial weapons shortages, particularly artillery and long-range capabilities, will allow President Putin to adapt to the intensity of the current war.”
“The Ukrainians have proven that they can force Russia to leave,” he said. “We can get our land back.”
He went on to warn that if the Western world does not stand up to Russian leaders, they will make the coming years “disastrous” for many more countries.
“Don't ask Ukraine when the war will end. Ask yourself why Putin can still continue the war,” Zelenskyy told a news conference.
Ukraine relies heavily on arms supplies from the United States and other Western allies to continue fighting Russia. Russia is a much larger military force with abundant artillery.
British Foreign Secretary David Cameron said support for Ukraine from the UK, EU and US would make a “big change” in the fight against Russia.
Outgoing Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte told the Munich conference that Europe should do more to help Ukraine because it is in Ukraine's interests and stop “all the whining and moaning about Trump.”
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said Putin's victory in Ukraine was “not only a tragedy for the Ukrainian people, but also sends a message not only to President Putin, but also to the Ukrainian people.” . [Chinese President] Xi [Jinping], the use of military force allows them to get what they want. So what happened in Ukraine today and what could happen tomorrow in Taiwan. Therefore, I strongly believe that it is a good idea for the United States to support Ukraine. It's not charity, it's an investment in their own safety. ”
