Redford Township, Michigan (FOX 2) – A truck plowed in front of a physical therapy room on Monday afternoon, causing witnesses to run off the road.
The vehicle, a GMC Sierra HD pickup truck, came to a stop in the middle of Athletico Physical in Redford Township. The damage left behind was extensive. However, no injuries were reported.
Witnesses said the truck was heading south on Telegraph Road.
“He came speeding down the road behind me and as soon as the light turned red he started changing lanes,” said Andrew Bennett, who witnessed the crash.
However, the car did not stop.Instead, it veered off the road and collided with a utility pole. In front of 96 interchange.
“It broke like a toothpick and went right into the building,” Bennett told FOX 2.
Douglas Wilson and two of his friends were in the path of the truck.
“It looked like he was trying to hit us,” Wilson said. “That's when I got scared. I panicked and just (ran away).”
Three friends say the sound of the truck hitting a utility pole saved their lives.
“I heard a loud bang and my friend told me to run,” Timothy Carmichael said.
Paris Edwards was training in the building when the accident occurred.
“I heard a noise and the next thing I knew, I turned around and it was a thud,” Edwards said. “I screamed and ran to the other side.”
Thankfully, Edwards and the trainers inside were on the other side of the building.
As for the driver, Edwards said, “He got out of the car and was just looking at it, and then he tried to (walk away). The guy who was working there said, 'Hey, stand there. Don't leave. He's right there. “Stand up,” he said. ”
Police did not say whether the person was taken to a hospital or taken into custody. They remained at the scene until the truck was towed.
A portion of Telegraph Road was closed until DTE workers were able to remove the broken utility pole. The road has since reopened. However, business will be temporarily closed.
This incident is still under investigation.
