GORHAM — The Marcus Whitman Department of Fine and Performing Arts Theater will present the regional premiere of “Between the Lines” starting Friday.
“Between the Lines'' is a new musical based on the novel by internationally bestselling author Jody Pickult and her daughter Samantha Van Leer, and features a book by Pickult and Timothy Allen MacDonald, as well as Elissa Samsel and Kate. Featuring music by Anderson.
Delilah McPhee, 17, is strange. Everyone says so. Her parents are divorced, her father has a new family, and her mother works around the clock to make ends meet. Delilah accidentally injures Allie McAndrews, the most popular girl in her grade, and she becomes an outcast at her new school.
Delilah chose to immerse herself in a book, captivated by one story in the children's fairy tale “Between the Lines.'' There's a handsome prince, a castle, and an evil villain, but what if someone found out how often she climbs onto the roof outside her bedroom window to read (especially more so than her cool classmates)? cool classmates), she would be sent to sociable Siberia. ..eternally.
The kids at school are cruel, and Delilah rejects the only student who tries to befriend her, who is non-binary, and tells Delilah to ignore the haters. One day, the words “Help” appear on the page in front of Delilah's girlfriend. But when the line between her fantasies and reality begins to blur in unusual and surprising ways, Delilah discovers a way to keep her dreams and find her place in the real world.
