Mary in the Junkyard – Ghost
Mary in the Junkyard, a Windmill staple and experimental indie trio that has worked hard to gather fans through their raucous live shows, finally debuted last October with their single “Tuesday.” This week, they followed this up with “Ghost.” According to their Instagram, “That's wow wow wow.” Against a warm, fuzzy guitar backdrop, vocalist Clari Freeman Taylor screams a veritable “woo wee wee,” barking for her lover's attention. This is a fascinating and enchanting second installment from a band that is sure to be the next big band from the south London scene. (Caitlin Chatterton)
The visceral energy of “Get Numb To It!” provides the final boost to Friko’s debut album “Where we’ve been, Where we go from here” (released today). The Chicago duo's forward-thinking approach to textural showpieces, crunchy riffs and assertive drums, combine with soaring vocals to create an energetic indie-rock sound. Coupled with candid, poetic lyrics that meditate on the emptiness of modern life, this track serves as an exciting prelude to what Friko has yet to offer. (Emily Savage)
Amy Blue – All About Her
Following the release of her EP 'crumbs in my bed' last year, Amy Blue is back with her new single 'everything about her'. Blue teased it on Instagram, which put her in the spotlight even before its release, and the full version doesn't disappoint. Continuing the soulful, emotionally-baring nature of Blue's previous work, but with a brighter twist, the track sees her being hurt by someone she thought understood her past. It's driven by groovy synthesizers while telling a story about how it happened (feels like, “You know how it happened / But you do it anyway).” (Gemma Cockrell)
Leaving her Sydney bedroom, boarding a plane and landing on the sticky floor of a London club, Total Tommy's debut single 'Microdose' represents her physical and metaphorical journey to the other side of the world. . A faintly grunge-tinged ode to nights out and drunken (yet intoxicating) crashes, “microdose” bounces around the chorus with an anthemic yet intimate feel as she parties in the capital and her The first few months are ticking away. Experimental songwriter and producer Feo (the artistic alias of musician and multidisciplinary artist Theodora Laird) has released her new single “tnteen'' from her upcoming EP “run over''. Laird explores themes of excess, exploitation, depletion, and desire, which are reflected in the tracks' mysterious and complex layers. There's minimal room to breathe, but this only strengthens the message Laird is conveying to the listener, making the track come full circle and moving forward with purpose. (Gemma Cockrell)
Hex Girlfriend – Cafe Culture
Hex Girlfriend, the London-based duo formed by Noah Yorke and James Knott, have carved out an interesting corner for themselves somewhere between the dark sounds of heavy rock and sweaty club rave beats. i got you. Their latest album, Cafe Culture, leans toward the latter, with scattered drums writhing beneath soaring vocals, giving it an almost indie-pop vibe. It's a shoulder-shaking banger, proving that great things can come from unexpected fusions of genres. (Caitlin Chatterton)
