Continuing from the previous article, Buy vs. Build (See here) Legal tech consultancy Springbok AI is releasing a no-code toolkit to enable law firms and in-house teams to build their own custom “wrappers” on top of LLM.
It has been in private beta until now, but is scheduled to be released to the public under the brand name “Springlaw.” According to the group, it is “a powerful solution that does not rely on LLM, [you] Transform knowledge and processes into effective, generative, AI-powered tools for everyday workflows and customer-centric solutions.
So, if you're on the build side of the buy vs. build debate, this support product could be helpful.
Victoria Albrecht“The release of our groundbreaking SpringLaw suite of tools – Wizards, Chats and Tables – takes our process of turning the firm's long list of use case ideas for workflow automation and client solutions into tangible tools to the next level,” said John Friedman, CEO of Springbok AI.
The SpringLaw platform has three modules:
'Wizard: Create reusable workflow tools and monetizable client solutions based on your unique knowledge, expertise, and processes. Using this builder out of the box, users can create reusable workflow tools and monetizable client solutions based on their unique knowledge, expertise, and processes. The configurator provides “context” in the form of documents and “instructions” in the form of background prompts, so you can create and share entire collections of templated document generators, assistants, and workflow automations. Both concierge service (fast-track completion) and white glove service (quality assurance) options are available.
chat: Chats allows you to work dynamically and interactively on any document – contracts, white papers, reports, RFPs, etc. – simultaneously. Use Springbok's existing prompts or create a library specifically for your company to speak to your documents. Summarize, draft, extract. For those of you who have been following Springbok for a while, Chats was previously called “Springbok GPT”.
table: Do you need to evaluate a 200-property portfolio to assess the impact of the Leasehold Reform Bill? Or look at the outcome of 160 directors liability cases to consider financial penalties? Want to monitor the sustainable forestry management claims of five of your client's competitors for ESG tracking? It's all done! SpringLaw Tables allows you to search, filter and structure information from 100+ documents in minutes. The Tables will be publicly available from mid-July.

And as for why they can't do all this themselves within their own innovation team (though to be fair they probably could through a variety of means), Springbok adds: “SpringLaw uses a proprietary prompt architecture approach to enable LLMs to extract information from the data in a safe and secure manner, using military-grade encryption at rest and in transit, and can be hosted by Springbok or in-house.”
So this will be useful for companies that want to get into LLM-based DIY tool building but don’t have a large innovation team that can cover every aspect of the build.
Innovation Experts Joe Cohenwho helped develop the FleetAI product at Springbok while at Dentons and is now at Charles Russell Speechleys, working with the group again, comments: “There are many benefits to building our own tools on top of foundational models that exist in the market. Ultimately, our aim is to leverage generative AI to build client solutions.”
“Most generative AI technology options are either too broad or too narrow, leaving little room for customization. We needed a secure generative AI platform that would allow us to create customized prompts and tools. We also needed the platform to be easy to use and collaborate on. SpringLaw is exactly that for Charles Russell Speechlys with its new Sidekick platform. I appreciate Springbok's lean approach, straightforward guidance and flexibility. The best part about being a Springbok partner is the ability to influence the roadmap.”
So the buy and build theme continues. And as I said in the AL article this morning, the difference now is that the LLM is so powerful and adapted to legal needs. It really does feel like the legal sector is taking DIY (with the LLM at its core) to a whole new level.
That said, vendors will never be left behind — they'll look at what enterprises are building and ensure they meet those needs in future iterations, or startups will emerge to address some of the more niche use cases — but the buy vs. build conflict will always be there.
