The summer movie season may start next weekend, but the release calendar is still being worked out. The latest movie to move spots is Sony's comic book movie Kraven the Hunter, which will be released in December instead of Labor Day weekend.
The studio announced the move late Friday, leaving Disney and Marvel's “Deadpool & Wolverine” as the only major superhero releases this summer. It is scheduled to be released on July 26th.
Kraven the Hunter, an origin story directed by J.C. Chander and starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson as the Spider-Man villain, is rated R. The cast also includes Ariana DeBose, Alessandro Nivola, and Russell Crowe. His is one of several Sony Spider-Man spin-offs, including “Venom'' and “Madame Web.''
The new theatrical release date is December 13th, and will compete against the animated The Lord of the Rings: Battle of the Rohirrim.
The studio had previously scheduled the release of the new movie “The Karate Kid,” starring Ralph Macho and Jackie Chan, on the same day, but it has been postponed to May 2025. The movie will follow the sixth and final season of Cobra Kai. ' was postponed due to the Hollywood strike.
Comscore analyst Paul Dergarabedian previously predicted that this summer's box office revenue would fall short of the $4 billion in summer 2023 box office revenue. Losing a major wide release doesn't help with predictions. Sony has added Blumhouse's horror novel “They Listen,” starring John Cho and Katherine Waterston, to its Labor Day weekend spot in place of “Craven the Hunter.”
