OAKLAND — A 41-year-old security guard was shot multiple times during a robbery at the store where he worked early Wednesday, authorities said.
Officials said the guard was in stable condition in a hospital recovering from at least two wounds.
The robbery occurred around 12:52 a.m. Wednesday at the It's What It Is Smoke Shop, 2420 San Pablo Ave. in the Hoover-Foster neighborhood, authorities said.
According to police, two men entered the store. After remaining for a while, one of them went behind the counter, pointed a gun at the cashier and demanded money, while the other stood guard.
It is unclear whether the security guard was able to see the suspect's gun. Authorities said when they approached the suspect, he did not immediately pull out a gun.
The armed suspect grabbed cash from the cashier. Police said the man fired at the security guard as he began to flee.
Authorities say the guard was able to pull out his own gun and fire at least one shot at the robber as he and his accomplice fled. There were no signs of injury to either suspect.
Police said the suspects fled in a waiting vehicle. A detailed description of the suspect has not been released.
Oakland Police and Crimestoppers are offering a reward of up to $7,500 for information leading to the arrest of the robber. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 510-238-3326 or Crime Stoppers at 510-777-8572.
