Sean Bailey, a longtime Walt Disney Co. executive who directed the studio's live-action films, is leaving the company, the Burbank-based entertainment giant announced Monday.
David Greenbaum has been named the newly created president of Disney Live-Action Films and 20th Century Studios, where he will oversee both divisions' film projects across theaters and streaming. Mr. Bailey will be stepping down from his position after 14 years at the helm.
During his tenure, Mr. Bailey oversaw Disney's recent live-action remakes of “The Little Mermaid,'' “Aladdin'' and “Beauty and the Beast.'' The category also had last year's box office flop, “Haunted Mansion,” which was inspired by theme park rides.
Co-chairman Alan Bergman said: “David has an incredible creative sensibility and eye for film, as evidenced by his track record at Searchlight Pictures and his deep relationships across the industry. “He has built a reputation as a strong leader and creative executive.” Disney Entertainment said in a statement:
“We are thrilled to have him take on this new and important role. We were fortunate to have a strong creative leader in Steve Asbell at 20th Century, and he will work closely with David to lead the creative team.” I look forward to taking a more strategic look at both brands across the board and from an operational perspective. I would also like to thank Sean Bailey for his many contributions and leadership during his tenure at Disney.”
Matthew Greenfield will continue to lead Searchlight, the Disney-only film studio known for such prestigious films as “Poor Things,'' which was nominated for an Oscar for Best Picture.
This is a developing story.
