When it comes to Hollywood star power, it's hard to beat Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt.
Both were nominated for this year's Academy Awards. He played Blunt in Oppenheimer, Gosling in Barbie, and Ken, the ultimate himbo.
But with the Babenheimer rivalry behind them, the two teamed up for a new blockbuster, The Fall Guy.
The story follows a stuntman (Gosling) who tracks down an unemployed movie star to win back his ex-girlfriend (Blunt).
Warning: Minor plot details below
Fall Guys is an adaptation of the 1980s American TV show of the same name and is a love letter to stunt performers.
But playing a stuntman was probably not the obvious choice for Gosling, who admits, “I don't like heights.”
At the beginning of the movie, he falls from a 12-story building. “I didn't need any skill, I just got dropped. But it was kind of scary. It was a mental hurdle.”
Brandt may not be dropped from great heights, but he also participates in stunts. A battle between a villain and an alien (well, at least an actor dressed as an alien).
“Oh my god, she turns everything into a weapon. I'm glad you took the props off. We don't call her Stanty Branty for nothing,” Gosling jokes.
Brant added, “Stunty Branty is like a word that's popular right now, especially in otherworldly circles.''
The two differ on who is the toughest. Gosling was quick to call her co-star, joking that the day before, she had been “planking” in a Pilates session while everyone else was taking a nap.
But Blunt said they were evenly matched, telling Gosling, “I wouldn't have taken the fall you did the first time.”
It's clear that they get along well, both on screen and in person.
british humor
And it turns out it could be due to Gosling's British sense of humor.
“I find Ryan endlessly funny,” Brandt says. Ricky) Gervais. ”
Blunt and I admire his humor, but Gosling suggests we might be making fun of him and insists we're not (we're not).
“I'm just kidding,” he retorted. There's some irony in it.
Gosling may have been joking, but the stress of thinking he had offended Ken was on an order of magnitude.
Speaking of Ken, I couldn't resist bringing up his performance of “I'm Just Ken” at the Oscars.
I told Gosling that I thought doing a song and dance on live TV was scarier than the stunts in The Fall Guys.
he said with a laugh. “Especially when you're performing for Emily Blunt, they just look at you and go, 'No, thumbs down.'
“That's all he saw when he looked out. Everybody else was into it and I was like, 'Wow,'” Brandt replied, quickly adding, “No, I thought it was truly phenomenal.”
“It was scary,” Gosling admits. “But the kids and Eva[Mendez, his partner]came to rehearsal the day before. That was the real performance for me. That was the performance I was most nervous about, so after that… It was actually easy.”
“They gave me some tips,” Brandt jokes.
Blunt brings his own musical performance to The Fall Guy, singing Phil Collins' “Against All Odds.” It's very different from her many numbers in Mary Poppins Returns.
When I asked her if she wanted to perform at next year's Academy Awards, she quickly replied,
“That's what I said: don't speak too quickly,” Gosling warns.
Gosling says his latest film aims to shine a spotlight on stunt performers, the unsung heroes of the film industry.
“They dress like us and do dangerous things for us. They take offense for us, they put themselves in danger for us.” Gosling “They're playing our characters, too. They're actors from the same union, too. But they hide their faces and disappear into the shadows, and everyone pretends they weren't there.”
“The better they do their job, the more it goes away in a sense. That's over. We're flipping the script.”
Both stars believe that the Oscars should recognize stuntmen and women. “Right now! Why not before then?” Brandt yells.
Furthermore, she added: “They've trained for this and they have an indescribable courage. Stunt performers have an inherent humility so they don't feel the need to broadcast what they're doing. But I think it's time for us to do that.” ”
“They take more risks than anyone else. Their work is an art form, designed just like makeup or costumes or anything else,” Gosling says.
“A sweaty sight”
The movie is one of the blockbuster releases this year and has received positive reviews so far.
The Independent called the film “a sweaty spectacle that celebrates the marriage of heart-stopping stunt work and charismatic movie stars.”
They added that Gosling “brings a bit of energy to the role of Colt Sievers, an experienced stuntman.”
“It's all a fizzy, funny and compelling romantic delight, a homage to the art of making blockbuster films with big stunts,” said the Guardian.
New York Magazine described the film as “a genre-blending, pure expression of cinematic love.”
But what do Blunt and Gosling's own children think of their film?
It turns out that they are very critical of their famous parents.
They both laugh at their children's “indifference” to their work.
“They just want us to be their parents,” Brandt says. “My kids have seen Mary Poppins once and they've seen Jungle Cruise once. It's a one-time thing for them.”
“My kids have been watching Mary Poppins over and over,” Gosling replied, to which Blunt added that their daughters “are mad at Ken.”
“That's the way it's supposed to be,” she laughed. “Kids are just trying to get you out the door while you're at home in sweatpants, tied up with duct tape.”
The Fall Guy will be released in theaters in the UK on May 2nd.
