OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – Omaha's historic Little Bohemia neighborhood is booming with new businesses and apartments, but as the area continues to grow, so does traffic.
“[We see about five trucks] Please come within one day. If they don't have a place to park, we will be dropped off. ”
Dave Hempel's sheet metal factory business has been located along Route 13 for many years. As traffic increases, concerns about accessibility and safety increase, he says.
“The new BID is more focused on bringing safety to the forefront on a faster schedule,” Hempel said. “We found that people in the industry outside of the current BID felt they wanted to maintain operational capacity.”
Omaha City Council approved the current development-focused BID a year ago. Hempel said the new board will focus on other aspects of improving the area.
“It's important to improve lighting in that area, improve parking and find somewhere to park outside of the hallway,” Hempel said. “It also has the meaning of a streetscape that helps with traffic control.”
Rick Hullinger owns Chicago Lumber nearby. Although he is not a member of the board, he sees this as a way to help ensure the field is up to date as it grows.
“Safety is important on the highway leading into downtown,” Hallinger said.
City councilors are expected to consider approving the BID at their next meeting scheduled for Tuesday afternoon.
