Nomad TANGO, a non-profit organization founded in Santa Barbara in 2021 to promote and support tango dancing, will be hosting a Noche de Tango event on Thursday, April 18th at Buena Onda & Empanadas in Santa Barbara. It will be the start of its fourth season.
The group will host the Gorczynski Tango Quartet, an all-American tango band made up of four maestros. Each of the four have performed in some of the world's greatest music halls, but all fell in love with tango and now prefer to perform in bohemian rooms, incorporating the South American dance.
Other performances in the Nomad TANGO season include Argentinian “tango punk” band El Cachivache in October; And in November, the full tango show “Rememberanzas'' will be held.
The 2024 calendar of events also includes:
Nomad Tango Movie Night.
Destination: Tango, a program featuring national and international tango masters.
Nomad Academy, online lecture series.
This is the 10th year of Monday practices at the Carrillo Recreation Center.
Nomad Tango was born in the aftermath of the pandemic with a mission to support Tango Argentino dancers, musicians, and teachers. In 2021, the intimate nature of close dancing is impossible, there are few musical gatherings, and theaters are closed. Tango faced difficult times.
Recognizing the importance of this art form, which was declared a World Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO in 2009, Nomad Tango is committed to the revival of tango.
According to Nomad Tango, Tango is recovering and thriving. Nomad Tango himself has moved to a new stage with his current approach, which includes his three strategies:
Community Support and Expansion: Enhance the enjoyment of tango in local communities through practices, classes, and shows featuring live music and professional tango dancing.
The development of art forms, including the exploration of new show formats, musical styles, and evolving dance forms to propel the arts into the future.
Bridging the distance between Argentine and American tango through cross-pollination between American and Argentine artists and dancers.
Nomad Tango is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
