“Sunset Boulevard,'' starring Nicole Scherzinger, swept this year's Olivier Awards.
The musical won seven trophies at a ceremony held at London's Royal Albert Hall on Sunday (April 24), with former Pussycat Dolls singer Nicole, 45, taking home the award for Best Actor in a Musical. Jamie Lloyd won the award for best director for the film.
The company's technical team was also recognized with Jack Knowles for Best Lighting Design, Alan Williams for Music Supervision and Adam Fisher for Best Sound Design.
Jamie said at the event that Nicole gave a “timeless performance” and said he expected her to take Broadway by storm when she moves to New York later this year.
Succession actress Sarah Snook, 36, won the Best Actress award for her role in the 26th role she played in her West End debut, The Picture of Dorian Gray.
“Why would I give a 60,000-word monologue to an 8-month-old baby?” she said of memorizing her lines while nursing her baby at night.
James Graham's football drama “Dear England'' won two awards: Best New Play and Best Supporting Actor for “Will Close.''
Will dedicated his award to “all the single mothers on the city council” and said his mother's encouragement was the reason he continued to perform.
Mark Gatiss, 57, won the Best Actor award for his role in Motives and Clue and also criticized today's theater industry for closing its doors to ordinary actors.
He said: “As a working-class person who went to a comprehensive school, the routes that brought me here have virtually disappeared.”
“Operation Mincemeat,'' which depicts a World War II conspiracy to deceive the Nazis, won the award for best new musical, and Amy Trigg won the award for supporting actress in a musical for her role as Agnes in “Little Big Things.''
Arlene Phillips, 80, won the award for best choreography for “Guys and Dolls'' with James Cousins, and “Drop the Dead Donkey'' star Haydon, who died in October at the age of 66. – Gwynne's posthumous achievements were also recognized.
