Branson is known for its live shows, amusement parks, recreation, shopping, and other attractions. That's why U.S. Rep. Brian Seitz (R-Branson) is proposing a bill that would designate the southwestern Missouri town as the “Live Entertainment Capital of Missouri.”
“Branson has more than 35,000 theater seats, many of which feature live music and musicians. Branson is unique not only in Missouri but in the United States,” Seitz said. “Therefore, designating Branson as Missouri's official live entertainment capital is basically a no-brainer. Branson is experienced. Branson, Missouri hosts some of the largest theater and music presentations in the state or in the nation. We offer everything to almost everyone.”
Seitz said Branson's entertainment scene attracts about 10 million visitors each year.
“Tourism in the state is responsible for $18 billion in revenue, $4 billion of which comes from Branson, Missouri,” Seitz said.
He said Branson, a town of 13,000 people, attracts many young people and families, as well as retired tour buses.
“Branson now has something for everyone,” Seitz said. “Twenty, 30 years ago, it was country. It was comedy. Teeth turned black.”
During House debate on the bill, Rep. Kevin Windham, D-Hillsdale, said he was skeptical of the designation because he said Branson and Taney counties are not the most welcoming places for black people.
The Missouri House of Representatives has given preliminary approval to the bill. One more yes vote would send the bill to the Senate for reconsideration.
