In preparing the film, the Swedish filmmaker drew inspiration from a social psychology study conducted at the University of Virginia called “The Challenge Of The Disengages Mind.'' The results showed that participants did not enjoy spending 6 to 15 minutes alone in a room doing nothing but thinking. To take the experiment a step further, the researchers added a twist. With the push of a button, subjects can administer harmless but extremely painful electric shocks to themselves if they wish. It turns out that a quarter of all women and two thirds of all men chose to press the button. One man gave himself 190 electric shocks in 15 minutes because he couldn't bear to be alone with his thoughts.
The project will be Ostlund's second English-language film and seventh feature film. guitar mongoloid (2004), involuntary (2008), play (2011), force majeure (2014), The Square (2017) and love triangle of sadness (2022). The last two of his films won the Palme d'Or at Cannes. That is, he is one of the few film directors to have won this award twice.
The film is a Swedish-German-French co-production, directed by long-time colleague producer Eric Hemmendorff of Platform Productions and producer Philippe of the Paris-based Co-Production Office, which also handles global sales. – Reunited with Bober.
