Jane Fonda doesn't mince words, even when it comes to Jennifer Lopez.
The outspoken Oscar winner recently appeared in “The Greatest Love Story Never Told,” a documentary about the making of Lopez's latest album, “This Is Me…Now,” and its accompanying musical film.
Fonda expressed “concerns” about Lopez rekindling her relationship with Ben Affleck.
The newlyweds famously dated in the early 2000s, but Bennifer called off their engagement in 2004 after receiving so much tabloid material and attention. Fonda, who starred opposite Lopez in “Monster in Law'' (2005), says she is now worried. Regarding the possibility of repeat.
“First of all, I want you to know, I don't really know why, but I feel invested in you and Ben. And I really, really, really want this to work. I hope to go,” she told Lopez over the phone. A scene from the documentary premiered on Prime Video on Tuesday.
“But this is my concern,” Fonda says. “It feels too much like they're trying to prove something instead of just living it. You know, all the other pictures are of them kissing or hugging each other.”
Although Lopez claims they are simply “living their lives,” the film reveals their contrasting views on the spotlight. According to it, Affleck gifted her a book for Christmas 2021 that recorded all the letters and emails she had ever exchanged, but only Lopez reportedly shared them with others. It became clear that there was.
Affleck titled the book “The Greatest Love Story Ever Told,” and it also inspired the film's title.
“I initially had very firm boundaries with the press, and I don't think Jen was as opposed to that as I was,” he says in the film. “I was very against it. We got back together and I said, 'Listen, one thing I don't want is a relationship on social media.'
“Then I kind of realized that it wasn't fair to ask this question,” Affleck continued. “It's like you end up marrying a boat captain and you say, 'Well, I don't like the water.' We have different kinds of approaches and we're trying to learn to compromise.” They’re just people.”
In a new Apple Music interview with Zane Lowe, Lopez explained that in the beginning, they “didn't feel like they were going to make it” and that they simply weren't “mature” enough at the time.
“I do not think so [Ben] I’m very happy that I do all of this,” Lopez says of her project in the film. “But he loves me and he knows I'm an artist and he knows you can't stop me from making the music that I make. He will support me in every way… He doesn’t want to stop me.”
“But that doesn't mean I'm satisfied with him being my muse,” she added.
