Imelda Staunton still wears the clothes she wore when she played Queen Elizabeth II.
The Crown actress, 68, played the monarch (who died in September 2022 at age 96) in the final two seasons of Netflix's hit royal drama, winning Best Actress at the BAFTA Television Awards and Golden Globe Awards. Nominated.
She has now admitted that she continues to wear her Elizabethan clothes even after immersing herself in her persona, with The Sun quoting her as saying:
“I finished it last May and June, and I shook it off, so now I can get back up and do some interesting things. It took me that long.
“I was doing it day in and day out. It was a long time because I knew I was doing it in 2019 and I started in 2021. I have four years of her in my head.
“You can see the work on screen, from the sets to the costumes. I'm wearing her shirt right now.”
Imelda attended a charity event in Brighton this week wearing the same blouse she wore for her role as Elizabeth.
Despite her role as the late king being praised by critics, other royal commentators have criticized her portrayal.
Historian Hugo Vickers, 71, said the late Queen Elizabeth, who died in 2022 at the age of 96, was “briefed” by courtiers about the series, and that her husband Prince Philip was “deeply disturbed” by one episode. he told Page Six. She suggested that she was partly responsible for the death of her sister Cecil in a plane crash.
He added that the show seemed to portray the late queen unfairly, and said of Imelda's performance: “There's no getting away from the fact that they're tearing out the soul of a living human being.” It's despicable.
“This Queen looks so bored and doesn't look like her at all. The Queen has always managed to keep a twinkle in her eye and a sense of humor, even in the most difficult of times. This Woman on TV I didn't feel depressed like I did.
“Imelda Staunton just looks like a boring housewife, a real country bumpkin and nothing like a real queen.”
