IMAX and Dolphin Entertainment partnership
In May 2022, IMAX Corporation and Dolphin Entertainment signed a multi-year agreement to jointly fund the development and production of a number of feature-length documentaries that will be shown in global markets.
The partnership was seen as an important milestone for Dolphin as it marked the beginning of a new revenue-generating venture.
The Blue Angels was originally scheduled for release in 2023, but will now be released in theaters and on Amazon Prime in May of this year.
Bill O'Dowd, CEO of Dolphin Entertainment, said in an exclusive interview with Investing.com that the deal is “very unique” for Dolphin for several reasons.
“First, we have a 50/50 agreement with IMAX, which means Dolphin and IMAX are co-funding the project equally,” he said. “This is strategic because we are co-producing a documentary film with IMAX that is guaranteed to have a theatrical release. This is usually unheard of in the documentary film industry.”
O'Dowd further revealed that Dolphin has the opportunity to sell streaming rights and secure significant revenue for projects before they are released in theaters, adding, “That's why we decided to make “The Blue Angels.'' That's what we did with Prime Video.”
“All content will generate a recurring revenue stream for years to come, but this is especially true for documentaries using IMAX,” he added. “The Blue Angels will begin performing in IMAX 'institutional' theaters in six months, and we anticipate that will serve as an annuity for more than 10 years.” ”
Documentary “Blue Angels” – the first of many documentaries

“We don't want to give away any secret, but IMAX and Dolphin are looking to announce their next project together in the near future,” he added.
Regarding the streaming deal with Amazon, O'Dowd said, “We are thrilled to have Amazon as a partner for the release of 'The Blue Angels,'” adding that he will seek streaming partners for all of his documentaries. Amazon's involvement is not guaranteed. all projects.
Still, he said he really enjoyed working with the Amazon team on this project, saying, “They were great and I would definitely want to work with them again.”
