Emma Stone wants to be left out at all costs when it comes to choosing sides between her famous ex-lovers Joe Alwyn and Taylor Swift.
In a press release promoting the release of Kinds of Kindness, Stone was full of praise for his co-star in the film, Alwyn.
“I love Joe,” she said. “We had to do some pretty dark stuff in this film, so it was very comforting to be with him because he's one of the kindest people I've ever met.”
Kinds of Kindness will reunite Alwyn and Stone, who co-starred in the 2018 film The Favorite, on screen. Both films were directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, whose 2023 film Poor Things won Stone her second Oscar in March.
Stone's comments about Alwyn quickly started making headlines after the “Kinds of Kindness” press release was issued this week.
Alwyn has been the subject of heated debate online following the release of Taylor Swift's latest album, The Tortured Poets Department, last month. He and Swift dated for about six years before ending in April 2023, and their breakup is thought to have inspired many of her album's lyrics.
Of course, Stone and Swift have maintained a close friendship over the years. The two have been photographed together at numerous events, including the 2010 premiere of Stone's film Easy A and the 2011 Met Gala.
Swift also reportedly attended the New York premiere of Poor Things, although she didn't walk the red carpet. Stone may or may not have been an influence on the bonus track “When Emma Falls In Love,” which appears on last year's re-recorded album Speak Now (Taylor's Version).
However, Stone briefly faced backlash after jokingly calling Swift an “asshole” during a post-2024 Golden Globes press conference in January.
At the time, Stone was asked how she felt when she heard the applause and cheers immediately after Swift won the Golden Globe. Stone also said that she was “very happy” that Swift was there and that the two have known each other for almost 20 years, but that many people are calling her “haters.” ' was taken at face value.
“I'll never make a joke like that again because I saw a headline that took it completely out of context,” Stone later told Variety, before pointing to himself and adding, “How stupid.”
