LOS ANGELES — Britney Spears and her father, Jamie Spears, are resolving lingering issues in the court conservatorship that has dominated her life and financial decisions for nearly 14 years in what could become a long, ugly and revealing story. It will avoid a trial.
Hearings on these issues, including a request for dismissal from Jamie Spears seeking a broader judgment, were scheduled for Monday, but were moved from the court's calendar after a judge approved the settlement on Friday. It was done.
Britney Spears was removed from her conservatorship in November 2021. It comes after two speeches she gave to judges turned previously mounting public sentiment into a cause best known for the hashtag #FreeBritney against the conservatorship.
But several elements remained, lingering in court, including the final payment to the lawyers who helped administer the conservatorship. Spears' lawyer, Matthew Rosengart, had also called for a public hearing on Spears' allegations of financial misconduct and excessive surveillance of Spears.
All of this would be resolved in the proposed settlement, the terms of which were not disclosed in a series of filings last week, one of which states that Jamie Spears will be “completely and conclusively disposed of by the former estate conservator.” He was dismissed as such.”
“While her conservatorship ended in November 2021, her desire for freedom is now complete,” Rosengart said in a statement. “Her freedom, as she had hoped, includes that she will no longer have to attend court, be involved in court or become involved in any legal proceedings regarding this matter. It is our honor and privilege to represent, protect and defend Britney Spears.”
The trial was scheduled to begin next month.
Jamie Spears' lawyer, Alex Weingarten, did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Associated Press.
However, he told the New York Times and other media outlets that “Jamie loves his daughter very much” and “hopes more than anything that they can reconcile and be a family again.” He has always acted in Britney's best interest. ”
“Jamie is so excited that it's all over,” Weingarten said. “He deplores the irresponsible and unwarranted allegations made against him in his public life.”
In her memoir, The Woman in Me, published last year, Spears said she felt her father was “always thinking about money.”
She married her longtime boyfriend, Sam Asghari, a few months after her conservatorship ended, but Asghari filed for divorce just a year later. The divorce has not yet been finalized and the two are still legally married.
And although she has dabbled in music, including collaborating with Elton John in 2022, she denied rumors of a new album in January and vowed to “never return to the music industry.”
