If you're looking for something a little more unique than a standard headboard, there are plenty of stylish DIY headboards you can create for your bed. From headboards made from doors to beautiful hand-upholstered upholstery, there are plenty of customization options to make a statement without breaking the bank.
Take homeowner Sasha Faiz's burgundy wavy headboard, for example. This was her $600 DIY project. “This may sound like a big deal,” Sasha says. “But it made sense if the headboard spanned the entire wall and included a side table and wall sconce.”
It also brings into focus the bedroom, which, as Sasha says, was once “a dingy, lifeless place that I only used for sleeping.” She particularly disliked the predominantly tan color scheme, old windows that wouldn't open, and no functioning closets. “The only thing we liked was the original floor. Unfortunately, it had been sanded down so many times that it sank and we couldn't salvage it,” Sasha added.
New wood floors were a budget-friendly compromise.
Sasha and her partner Andrew Gose started redoing their bedroom, starting with the floor. “I wanted it to be the same floor as the main floor, but to cut costs I went straight instead of herringbone,” she says.
We also replaced non-functioning windows with new ones.
Next came the pink color scheme.
After installing warm wood floors, Sasha and Andrew wanted to find a color that complemented the flooring and lighting in the space.
The corrugated headboard was DIY made using finds from a big box.
The room's wavy headboard is painted in the latter color and was inspired by a vintage dresser Sasha researched. “I'm not a carpenter… but I knew I couldn't find this shape in stores, so I took it upon myself to make it myself,” says Sasha.
She completed the project using plywood, a jigsaw (a first!), pre-made floating nightstands, and paint. Her DIY of the headboard is both her favorite element in the room and an accomplishment.
IKEA PAX solved your closet problem.
Another thing Sasha is particularly proud of is the IKEA PAX closet system at the foot of the bed that she and her husband installed. And since they wanted it to look architectural, they were pleasantly surprised to find options that matched well with the wall color. -in. “In this case, we went with a gray-beige REINSVOLL door,” she says. “We had the trim made around it, and we found a paint color by Benjamin Moore called “Baja Dunes'' that perfectly matched the door.”
Sasha and Andrew added wavy hardware to the door to compliment the wavy headboard. This piece changed the function of the bedroom. “It’s nice to be able to organize my stuff so I don’t have to look at it!” says Sasha. “Most people around the world love her PAX wardrobe, and now we love it too.”
The biggest challenge of the whole project was getting the closet level, but that was more of an issue in a quirky old house than anything else. “If the floor hadn't been so crooked, the price of the room would have been cheaper!” Sasha says. (It cost about $7,000 to redo.) “Flattening the closet was more expensive than the closet itself, and it took a lot more time and money,” she added.
Yet, with time, money, and some DIY efforts, the room has been transformed into, as Sasha describes it, a “tranquil and inspiring” space. “Who would have thought that pink could help make us feel like we're in a peaceful place?” she says.
