Dali's Wonderland exhibit opens at Panhandle Plains Historical Museum
The Panhandle Plains History Museum (PPHM) recently unveiled its newest exhibit, “Dali’s Wonderland.”
PPHM is excited to welcome this new exhibition to the Bugbee Gallery. The dreamlike world of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, first published by Lewis Carroll in 1865, is a natural fit for the Surrealist art movement. One hundred years later, Surrealism's most important figure, Salvador Dali, painted a version of the story that incorporated his iconic melting clock and other avant-garde imagery. This limited edition book, housed in Sybil B. Harrington's personal library, was a gift from her daughter Sally. This book will join the collection of the Panhandle Plains Historical Museum in 2022 with assistance from West Virginia University's Harrington House and Jessica Mallard. “Dali's Wonderland” explores the relationship between art and literature.
“Dali is one of the most famous artists of the 20th century, and the most famous Surrealist artist.” I think it's important to emphasize, I think this exhibition really connects our world with other regions. It also reminds us of art, literature and the connections between them, especially Wonderland. and Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, to the Surrealist movement, which was deeply connected to literature and poetry,” said Deanna Craighead. Art curator at PPHM.
Dali's Wonderland is affiliated with the West Texas A&M University School of Information Technology. Thanks to this partnership, the exhibition will feature virtual flipbooks of Dali's works. In the coming months, the IT department will also be working together to incorporate elements of artificial intelligence and augmented reality into the exhibition. The museum will be offering several special programs this summer in conjunction with the exhibition, details of which will be announced soon.
Located on the campus of West Texas A&M University, PPHM offers visitors the opportunity to step into the history of the Texas Panhandle through special exhibits, permanent collections, special events, and more. For more information about PPHM, please visit www.panhandleplains.org.
