State University of New York President John B. King Jr. announced the second year of the President's Summer Research Excellence Fund. The foundation will provide paid internships to more than 150 undergraduate students this summer at eight campuses, including Stony Brook University.
As part of her 2024 State of the State Policy, Governor Kathy Hochul proposed the Empire AI Initiative. This will provide the State University of New York's four university centers and other leading New York research institutions the opportunity to conduct groundbreaking research and lead the nation in artificial intelligence research. Economic development focused on the use of AI to advance the public good.
In support of Empire AI and New York State's national leadership efforts in artificial intelligence, at least 22 of the 2024 Chancellor's Summer Research Excellence Fund paid internship experiences will focus on roles in AI, diversity, Focus on the need to increase equity and inclusion. AI research and development.
“Once in a generation comes a wave of technology that changes the way we live, like the invention of the printing press, radio, and the Internet,” Dr. King said. “That's why we offer internship experiences to students in the growing field of artificial intelligence to apply AI to problem solving, learn the ethics of AI, and increase diversity in STEM fields that research and innovate in this emerging technology. Internships are absolutely essential to a student's success because they provide experiences that students cannot get in the classroom alone. ”
Internship programs expand research opportunities to economically disadvantaged students, first-generation students, and others who may face barriers to securing research experiences. Participating campuses include Stony Brook University, University at Albany, Binghamton University, University at Buffalo, Downstate University of Health Sciences, New York State College of Environmental Science and Forestry, State Polytechnic Institute of New York, and Upstate Medical University.
The Summer Research Excellence Fund, supported by SUNY's Empire Innovation Program, covers all internship costs, including but not limited to student stipends/salaries, tuition/fees, housing, meal plans, childcare, and transportation. Covers student fees.
These internships are in fields such as biology, artificial intelligence, machine learning, cybersecurity, physics, astronomy, engineering, medicine, life sciences, chemistry, computer science, and clean energy.
Stony Brook University President Maury McInnis said, “As Stony Brook University prepares bright and talented students who can lead the next generation of scientific research, we are committed to shaping the future of STEM education and innovation with inclusion, equity, diversity, and Making it collaborative is a top priority.” “The generous and visionary support of the President’s Summer Research Excellence Fund will enable our students to excel at the highest level by providing hands-on research opportunities in important areas such as artificial intelligence, climate science, and clean energy. It allows you to get good grades.”
