WASHINGTON (NewsNation) — After multiple public debates on artificial intelligence in the Senate, the House has launched a bipartisan task force to focus on the topic and make legislative recommendations.
Representatives Jay Obanolte (R-Calif.) and Ted Lieu (D-Calif.) will co-chair the 24-member group, which will be joined by House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) and House Minority Leader Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana). Hakeem Jeffries (D.N.Y.) has announced that he will serve as co-chair. Tuesday.
Mr Johnson said in a statement that the MPs appointed to the task force “have expertise in AI and represent the relevant committees in their jurisdictions”.
The group is tasked with producing a report that includes policy proposals and other recommendations.
“Republicans and Democrats in the House have worked together to produce a comprehensive report detailing the regulatory standards and congressional actions needed to protect consumers and foster continued investment and innovation in AI. “We plan to do so,” Obernolte said.
A bipartisan group of senators hosted a series of nine forums on artificial intelligence last year. So far, legislation regarding AI has stalled.
“Advances in artificial intelligence have the potential to rapidly transform our economy and society, so we need Congress to work in a bipartisan manner to understand and plan for both the promises and complexities of this revolutionary technology. It's important to stand up,” Johnson said.
“Congress has a responsibility to advance the breakthroughs that artificial intelligence can bring and to ensure that ordinary Americans can benefit from these advances in an equitable manner,” Jeffries said in a statement. There is,” he said.
In October, President Joe Biden issued an executive order on artificial intelligence, directing the U.S. Department of Commerce to develop new safety standards and establish rules for authentication and watermarking of AI-generated content.
