VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — A local business is providing assistance to the family of a 10-year-old boy killed by a stray bullet.
Kiontre Thornhill was killed by a stray bullet inside his Portsmouth home on April 26th. Portsmouth Police Chief Stephen Jenkins called the boy an innocent bystander.
“He was a kind and loving person,” said Keontre's sister, Karaia, 11.
Karaia describes her brother as a peacemaker who stayed out of trouble.
“Sometimes he would come home and say, 'Mom, this person bullied me.' The next day he went to school and wanted to be cool with them, even if they bullied him. Even though I was bullying him, I still wanted to be friends,” she said.
Days after Keontre was buried, businesses in nearby cities have expressed support. On Thursday night, Super Heroes Ice Cream in Virginia Beach held a fundraiser for Keontre's family.
“We want to do everything we can,” ice cream shop owner Coleman Ferguson said.
FERGUSON For every ice cream sold Thursday night, $1 will be donated to Keontre's family.
Additionally, the Red Power Rangers stopped by to take photos and sign autographs, with all proceeds going to the family.
“I want them to know that I'm grateful. For what they did for my brother,” Karaia said.
Keontre's mother, Kevina Thornhill, echoed similar sentiments. Although it was too difficult for her to attend tonight's fundraiser, she wanted to share the following message with the community:
“I deeply appreciate everyone's kindness and solidarity during this difficult time. Your dedication to supporting me is truly amazing and I am grateful for the unwavering support of the community. My 10-year-old son We have a lot of plans for you and we appreciate your efforts.'' We are very grateful for your support during this difficult time. ”
Portsmouth Police have charged one person in connection with the incident. Shaunday Ross, 31, is charged with one count of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Detectives still need help locating a person of interest, 26-year-old Cleon Banks. Banks has not been charged with any crime, but detectives would like to speak with him about the shooting.
