Demi Lovato returned to the Met Gala on Monday for the first time in eight years after a bad experience there left her wondering whether she wanted to attend again.
After the 2016 gala, Lovato posted on Instagram a since-deleted photo of herself standing on the red carpet near Nicki Minaj, who seemed displeased. Lovato wrote that the photo “pretty much sums up my first and probably last Met Met.”
“I had a terrible experience,” she told Billboard in a 2018 interview. “It was very creepy.”
Lovato remembers “wanting to drink because she was so uncomfortable,” and ended up attending an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting wearing “millions of dollar diamonds.” He said he left work early.
“I had more relationships at that meeting with homeless people who are struggling with the same struggles that I'm dealing with than I did with people at the Met Gala,” she said.
Lovato has publicly documented her history of drug abuse and recovery.
In July 2018, Lovato was hospitalized with a near-fatal overdose, just a month after revealing she had relapsed when she released the song “Sober.” She later revealed in the 2021 YouTube documentary Demi Lovato: Dancing with the Devil that she suffered multiple strokes and a heart attack during her hospitalization.
The singer has since made a fresh start, telling Andy Cohen on his SiriusXM radio show last year that he has become sober and is in a “more positive mental space.”
“I have no regrets and I wouldn't change my path,” she said.
