When the Rolling Stones performed at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, Mick Jagger briefly intervened in Louisiana politics, verbally attacking the state's conservative governor.
According to New Orleans news outlets, the band was finishing up “You Can't Always Get What You Want” during their Thursday night set when Jagger started talking about inclusion. “We want to include him, too,” Jagger said of Gov. Jeff Landry. “Even if he wants to take us back to the Stone Age.”
Jagger did not mention specific policies. Landry is a Republican who was supported by former President Donald Trump. He served as the state's attorney general before becoming governor in January. He has supported controversial conservative laws and causes, including a near-total ban on abortion, a ban on gender-affirming medical care for transgender youth, and harsher penalties for crimes.
Landry applauded Jagger, 80, on social media.
“You don't always get what you want,” he posted on X. “The only person who might remember the Stone Age is Mick Jagger. I love you, and you're always welcome in Louisiana!”
Landry, 53, added #LoveMy CountryMusic at the end of her post.
