The Cornival Festival attracts more than 100,000 attendees each year.
SAN ANTONIO — The Helotes people in northwest San Antonio are preparing for four days of music, food, arts and crafts, and, of course, corn.
The annual Cornyval Festival begins Thursday at the PRCA Rodeo in Helotes and runs through Sunday. Thursday's festivities begin with a performance by the great retro band Spasmatics.
The event also includes a life-sized carnival, a super ferris wheel, games and amusements. Unlimited ride wristbands are available at Carnival. Visitors can also watch his three-night PRCA rodeo on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
Young women from the Helotes region will also compete in the Miss Herotes Scholarship Pageant as part of the festival.
The first Helotes Cornival was held in 1966 to celebrate the construction of a new local post office and was primarily funded by the late John T. Floor, founder of Floor's Country Store, which still operates in downtown Helotes. it was done.
Since the 1800s, feed corn has been a staple crop in northwestern Bexar County and south Texas. Helotes and Cornyval pay homage to the region's heritage. The harvest of this era is celebrated in Helotes every spring.
