Taylor Swift's latest album, “The Tortured Poets Department,'' was certainly the smash hit that many expected.
On Sunday, the 31-song double album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 album chart, selling 2.61 million so-called album-equivalent units in the United States during the week ending April 25, Billboard said. According to the magazine, traditional album sales (including digital download albums, CDs, vinyl LPs and cassette purchases) accounted for 1.914 million of that total.
“My mind is blown. I am completely touched by the love you have shown for this album,” Swift said in an Instagram post. “Is 2.6 million serious? Thank you for watching, streaming, and welcoming Tortured Poets into your life. I feel completely overwhelmed. ”
Tortured Poets is Swift's 14th album to reach number one. She currently ranks with Jay-Z for the second-most No. 1 albums by a recording artist, with both artists just a few steps behind the Beatles' 19 top albums.
Swift also has the most No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200 album chart among female recording artists. That accomplishment is even more impressive considering 14 of Swift's 15 albums (11 studio albums + four re-recorded “Taylor's Version” releases) have reached the No. 1 spot. It is. Her 2006 self-titled debut album peaked at number five.
In addition to the album's chart-topping performance, Swift recorded the album's biggest first-week sales to date. The honor previously went to “1989 (Taylor's Version),” which sold 1.359 million copies in its first week in the U.S. last year.
Tortured Poets has the second-highest weekly album sales in units earned (a measurement adopted by Billboard in 2014 to account for the popularity of streaming). In 2015, Adele's 25 sold a staggering 3.482 million album units.
According to Billboard, Swift also sold 859,000 copies of Tortured Poets on vinyl, the largest weekly sales for a vinyl album in modern times. Swift has released six vinyl records, four of which have different bonus tracks: “The Manuscript,” “The Albatross,” “The Bolter,” and “The Black Dog.” It is recorded.
Her success with the new album continued on Monday, with Swift reaching the top 14 on the Billboard Hot 100 Songs chart. Her lead single “Fortnite” featuring Post Malone reached number one.
According to Billboard, of all artists, Drake is the only artist to have more songs in the top 20 of the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart at the same time than Swift. In November 2022, Drake had 15 songs in the top 20. That month, Swift had 14 songs in the top 20.
In 2022, Swift became the first artist in the music chart site's history to simultaneously hold all 10 spots on Billboard's Hot 100 Songs chart with her song “Midnights.” According to Billboard, she has more Top 5, Top 10, Top 20, and Top 40 appearances than any other female artist.
Since its release on April 19th, “Tortured Poets” has also broken all-time records on the three major music streamers: Apple Music, Spotify, and Amazon Music. The album was his first album to record over 300 million streams in a single day on Spotify, and the first album to record his 1 billion streams in a week. According to Billboard, Swift's latest album had the biggest streaming week in album history.
The Grammy winner released his first 16-track album last week, followed by the surprise release of 15-track TTPD: The Anthology two hours later.
