“We weren't interested in making a movie about a celebrity, Tyler Perry, but really, how did he survive? [his upbringing]? '' Bekele explained during an appearance on Deadline's Contenders Television: Documentaries + Unscripted Event. “I think a lot of people know his story of being homeless, picking himself up on his own, and then fast forwarding to where he is now, but we wanted to cover the beginning as accurately as possible. I wanted to cover the middle part, the gray area, of achieving greatness and the context in which that person comes from, the kind of trauma and forgiveness, and what that's really like. That makes a person a unique individual. ”
During the production of the documentary, the directors asked Perry how he defined himself as a writer, producer, and director. What was his reaction? “I'm Maxine's baby,” he said, referring to his late mother. “I am my mother's son.”

By incorporating rare footage of Maxine Perry, Bekele and Ortiz were able to illustrate the bond between mother and son through extremely difficult times.
“When I found the footage of Maxine, I had a light bulb moment where I said, wow, this is the crux of his story. This is the heart and soul of Tyler Perry,” Ortiz said. “And to hear her voice and see the impact she's had on his life, not just in his work process, but throughout what he's built here in Atlanta, it's just breathtaking. It's like that.”
Perry was born into a long line of preachers on his mother's side. The film explores how his Christian faith influences his work and life.
“Tyler is very open about his beliefs and convictions, and that's another source of deep connection between him and his fan base. He's just born that way. This isn't something he suddenly started practicing. '' Bekele said. “But it is both a continuation and an introduction. [to] Maxine. She said, listen, I don't have much to give you, but I can share with you what I believe, and if you connect with it, this is a kind of survival It can be used as a guide. And it became a ray of hope for him. ”

The documentary doesn't shy away from acknowledging Perry's body of work, which has drawn criticism from Spike Lee and others for its comedic depictions of African-American life.
“We want to tell Tyler's full story. Instead of just making a piece where we're like, 'Hey, we want to show him in this wonderful light,' that dehumanizes him.” ,” Ortiz said. “What kind of reaction and what kind of criticism have we received?” [of his work]? Are there any validity to those criticisms, but are there any validity to his claims as well? And ultimately, we want to hand it over to the audience and say, “Hey, this is not for us to tell you how to feel.” This is so we can give you the complete and complete story, all transparent. ” ”
