Actor Michael Stuhlbarg opened his latest Broadway show on Monday, a day after a man allegedly threw a rock at the actor's head on Sunday night.
The 55-year-old actor, known for his roles in “Dope Sick'' and “Call Me By Your Name,'' previewed his latest film, “Patriots,'' at the Ethel Barrymore Theater in New York City. A photo published by Getty Images on Tuesday shows the costumed star surrounded by fellow stars, including Will Keene and Luke Tallon, as they appear to be applauding at the curtain call.
Stuhlbarg was “randomly attacked near Central Park” on Sunday, a Patriots representative confirmed in a statement shared with Deadline. A statement Monday added that Stuhlbarg is recovering and will continue to play as scheduled.
Representatives for Mr. Stuhlbarg did not immediately respond to the Times' request for confirmation or additional comment Tuesday.
A New York City Police Department spokesperson told the Times that around 7:45 p.m. ET on Sunday, officers responded to a 911 call about an “assault in progress” near 90th Street and East Drive in Manhattan's Central Park neighborhood. He admitted that he had responded. Police said a 55-year-old man was walking at the scene when he was “hit in the head by an unknown object,” but a preliminary investigation revealed it was a stone. Police and prosecutors allege in the report that 27-year-old Xavier Israel, who is homeless, threw a rock at the back of the victim's head, causing “abrasions.”
Police said Stuhlbarg chased Israel to the Russian consulate office on East 91st Street, where officers detained him. He was quickly arrested and charged.
The “Boardwalk Empire” actor refused medical treatment at the scene.
A spokesperson for the Manhattan District Attorney confirmed to the Times that Israel was arraigned in criminal court and granted bail. Israel faces felony charges of second-degree assault and second-degree harassment.
In legal documents shared with the Times, the unnamed woman said Stuhlbarg's assault left her with “red, swollen, and significant pain in the back of her head.”
The Times did not immediately receive a response from Israel's legal representatives.
A hearing on the assault charge is scheduled for Friday.
In “Patriots,” Stuhlberg stars as the late tycoon Boris Berezovsky, the man “behind President Vladimir Putin's terrifying rise to power,” according to a production statement. The setting is the early 1990s after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Keene will play Putin and Talon will play Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich.
“The Patriots,” directed by Rupert Gold, will make its official debut on April 22nd and run for 12 weeks at the Barrymore Theatre.
