Anthony Mackie has been a stalwart of the Marvel Cinematic Universe since his debut as Sam Wilson/Falcon in 2014's Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Actor Mackie's MCU tenure has included the films “The Avengers” and the Disney+ series “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” and Mackie is currently starring in the upcoming film centerpiece “Captain America: Brave New World.” He took on the role of Captain America in “.
While promoting his latest series Twisted Metal in the UK, Mackie compared the project to his experience making Marvel films, telling Radio Times that he has a lot more storytelling freedom outside of the MCU. .
“I think the Marvel stuff is completely different, just because it's a very controlled entertainment space. Yeah, there's only so much you can do,” Mackie said. “Stan Lee has given us so much content that there are limits to the creativity you can bring to the table. [‘Twisted Metal’], I was like, “There's a man and a woman…go!” So we were able to build a world around it. ”
Mackie agreed that while projects like Twisted Metal have the freedom to introduce and remove characters at will, it's not as easy to enjoy in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
“Exactly. And that's the difficult thing about the Marvel Universe. It's like you can't step outside of the confines of the comics,” the actor said. “You know, when we introduced Falcon, and when we introduced Falcon's growth to Captain America, all of that had to align with what Stan had already given us. So , it's an interesting juggling act to be a part of that world. It was more like, 'Let's just have fun and think about it as we go.'”
Captain America: Brave New World is directed by Julius Onah (The Cloverfield Paradox, Ruth) and co-written by The Falcon and the Winter Soldier creator Malcolm Spellman. The cast includes Harrison Ford, who will make his MCU debut as Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, replacing the late William Hurt. Ross is now the President of the United States in “Brave New World.” Liv Tyler and Tim Blake Nelson also star, reprising their roles as Betty Ross and Samuel Sterns from The Incredible Hulk. The supporting cast also includes Shira Haas and “Top Gun: Maverick” actor Danny Ramirez.
“Falcon and [the] It was really fun to do the Winter Soldier show. Actually, Sebastian and I were really looking forward to doing the second season. [Stan] You get paid to go out and play,” McKee said. “Because it's like me and him and Daniel Brühl. It's kind of like a perfect storm of happiness.”
“When they decided to go back to film, [with me]That's what it is, but I don't have any friends anymore, so that makes me feel a little weaker,” he added.
“Captain America: Brave New World” is scheduled to be released in theaters by Disney on February 14, 2025.
