Comedian Connor Wood brings his debut tour, “Fives & Friends,'' to Phoenix. He will be performing at Stand Up Live on Wednesday, March 27th.
Wood, known as “Fibula” on his social media accounts, first started making videos on TikTok after losing his job during quarantine. Sources attribute his “girly girl” comedy to a variety of factors. It's his upbeat set, calming nature, and the safe space he created with his fellow podcaster Brooke Averick on “Brooke and Connor Make a Podcast” (BNCMAP). Wood is also behind the viral “I Have Purse” trend along with Kelsey Kleppel. He became an Internet icon in every sense of the word.
These days, his stand-up shows sell out in nearly every city he's ever scheduled to visit. Touring for comedy didn't always go according to Wood's plans, but outside influences and his digital legitimacy shaped Wood into a true on-stage comedian. Wood's comedy inspirations are Amy Schumer, Larry David, Charlie Day, and his 2020 book Is This Anything? Jerry Seinfeld. He instructed Connor to write out his own sentences.
As Wood fantasized about a comedian sitting in the audience, he said, “That would be Judd Apatow. I've always admired his accomplishments, and I'd love to be a fly on the wall with his friends, the giants of the world” industry. Maybe this is a parasocial relationship between me and Judd, but do you think he likes me? For example, I wonder if he will be the kind of person who will take care of him. ”
The appeal of Wood's show crowd, which attracts and humors many Gen Zers with his comedy, is noted by online commenters as being “100% female.” When theorizing why his comedy has found such a safe haven with audiences, Wood says, “It's light-hearted and fun, and comedy should be just that, not pushed any further.” ” he shared.
Rather than using women as the punch line to his jokes, he finds comfort in the fan base he's amassed from his early career on TikTok and BNCMAP. “If I could get the Swifties to come to my show, for example, I'd be happy. I don't fundamentally know what will attract the audience, but I think it would be great and the first few shows… I’m really excited about how it turned out and how everyone responded,” Wood said.
Following his success through TMG Studios' BNCMAP, co-host Averic launched his first solo podcast called “Obsessed.” Averick breaks down the difference between casual fandom and full-blown obsession. To celebrate the launch of Averick's podcast, Wood revealed that aside from his first tour and interacting with fans, he's currently busy stocking the shelves of his new apartment with knick-knacks from estate sales and thrift stores. Told.
Wood, who was also obsessed with touring, announced the change in his practice after comedian and friend Hannah Berner offered tips on crowd work on BNCMAP.
“It's my favorite part of each show,” Wood said. “I enjoy hearing what the audience contributes more than what I'm trying to say on set. The crowd work is completely organic, and what's said at each show is never done again.” That's the beauty of the show.”
Due to fans' cries for more performances in the United States, the “Fivers & Friends” tour is moving toward adding new shows so that even more Fibbers can witness his stage presence firsthand. leaning towards
“Given that almost every show has sold out so far and the feedback we’ve received post-show, I’m sure there will be talk about other cities that didn’t have shows. There were a lot of people out there, so I just want to tell everyone to stay put in case there might be a tour point,'' Wood said.
Phibbs is scheduled to appear on Stand Up Live with Friends or Opening Comedians, which will be announced closer to the show date. Exclusive “Fibs & Friends” merchandise will be available at the sold-out show. For more information about the event, visit his website at Stand Up Live.
