Events scheduled for 2024 at the Southeast Ohio History Center on West State Street in Athens include speakers, exhibit openings, and a silent film concert performed by the history center's organ.
The Lyceum Luncheon Brown Bag Speaker series is typically held on the third Thursday of each month at noon. Specific dates and days of the week may change as needed to accommodate speakers. Dan Rowbotham of the Mad Dog Center for Welsh Studies will speak on March 21 about the Welsh cultural heritage of southeastern Ohio. Keith Milam of Ohio University's Department of Geological Sciences will speak on April 17 about the Serpent Mound impact crater. Pat Anderson talks about Indians. May 16th, on a mountain pass in southeastern Ohio.
Current exhibits include Southeastern Ohio A to Z and a photo exhibition by Josh Zielinski titled “Recollections.” The opening of the “Rix Mills Remembered'' exhibition by Lost Community resident and painter Paul Patton will be held Saturday at 2 p.m.
The History Center's organ will host two silent film concerts in the spring and fall. Renowned organist Dennis James will accompany Harold Lloyd in the 1924 silent film “Girl Shy'' on April 1st. James will return in the fall to accompany the popular 1924 film “Sherlock Jr.” starring Buster Keaton on the weekend of April 1st. November 1st and 2nd.
