A fireworks show is scheduled for Toms River, with several “pyrotechnics” being set off. Mayor Dan Roderick allegedly threatened to cut the Downtown Business Improvement District if 10 fireworks shows were not added to the Toms River Business Improvement District's budget.
TRBID Chairman Bob Shea said in the organization's 22-year history, no administration has ever taken the annual budget off the agenda.
“The net effect is that if that $70,000 is removed from the operating budget, jobs will be lost and many of the events currently held on the course will be eliminated,” Shea said. said.
With an operating budget of $286,000, the BID plans to host 68 events downtown this year, from farmers markets to festivals.
“I think it's a good idea to do one or two in the summer, but it's a good idea not to do five minutes every Friday night. That doesn't accomplish anything,” Toms River City Councilman Dave Cicozzi said. Told.
According to the board, Mayor Dan Roderick asked Haddie Park to host 10 Friday night fireworks shows at a cost of $70,000, but BID board members said realistically it would cost $126,000. It said the costs would force it to cut positions and other scheduled events.
Business owners told News 12 that BIDs are essential to success downtown.
“Over the past 10 to 15 years, we've seen fewer vacancies, lower crime rates, safer streets, less trash on the streets, and it's all because of BIDs,” said Matt Rotano, former town councilor and business owner. he said. president.
“For me, the BID is the first place I came downtown as a new business owner. I was invited to stay for a conference, and it is the epicenter of so much going on in Ocean County.” said Mike Hovans, owner of Perfect Swing Golf.
The BID board met Wednesday and voted to maintain the original budget, with the exception of fireworks costs. If the mayor and city council don't respond by posting an agenda for the next meeting, it could be challenged in court, Shea said.
“If that doesn't happen, we need to consider other treatments. Legal challenge? Yes. That's an option too,” he said.
