Sinead O'Connor's estate on Monday asked Donald Trump not to play her music at his campaign rallies, saying he considers the former president a “biblical devil.”
Mr. Trump has performed Mr. O'Connor's biggest hit, “Nothing Compares 2 U,'' at events and other events as he works to secure the Republican presidential nomination.
In a joint statement, O'Connor's estate and record label Chrysalis called on President Trump to “immediately cease using her music.”
The newspaper said the Irish singer, who died last year at the age of 56, “lived by a strict moral code of honesty, kindness, fairness and civility towards his fellow citizens.”
“We were therefore outraged to learn that Donald Trump was using her iconic performance 'Nothing Compares 2 U' at his political rally,” the statement said.
“It is no exaggeration to say that Sinead would have been disgusted, hurt and insulted if her work had been misrepresented in this way by someone she herself referred to as 'The Devil of the Bible'.” As parents, we demand that Donald Trump and his associates immediately stop using her music.”
Fiercely outspoken, O'Connor was critical of the Roman Catholic Church long before the sexual abuse allegations became widely publicized and has spoken openly about her own mental health struggles.
She was found unresponsive in her London home in July and was pronounced dead at the scene. Her coroner ruled that she died of natural causes.
O'Connor joins a growing list of artists who object to Trump's use of their music, including Rihanna, Neil Young, Linkin Park, the late Tom Petty and Aerosmith's Steven Tyler.
