West Branch Local School has received national honors for music education 13 times.th For a year in a row.
The National Association of Music Merchants Foundation has named West Branch a Best Community for Music Education.
The NAMM Foundation designation is given to school districts that provide music access and education to all students.
The University of Kansas Music Institute reviewed West Branch's entries.
Funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instructional time, facilities, support for music programs and community music production programs.
“The prosperity of our music department is a direct reflection of the community members who work with us, volunteer their time, and continue to make music a priority within our school district and community.” said Krista Clay, the district's vocal and theater director. . “Receiving this award for the first time in 13 years makes me very proud of our entire music faculty, but most of all, I am very proud of our students who have dedicated their time and passion to our program.”
Students participating in the program said the district's music program goes beyond just performances.
“Music class helps you understand language and vocabulary, which helps you in other classes,” said Haley Close, a fourth-year choir director at West Branch. “It also allows all students to utilize and express their talents, from singing to dancing, building sets, leadership roles and more.”
