Veeam announced a managed data cloud offering using its acquired Azure-based Cirrus Backup-as-a-Service (BaaS) software to protect Microsoft services.
Veeam first entered the BaaS space last October when it purchased Cirrus software from partner CT4. The company already offered managed backup and DR services delivered through Veeam Cloud and Service Provider (VCSP) partners. These included his BaaS in Microsoft 365, public clouds (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud), managed backups and offsite backups. In October 2022, he also released Veeam Backup for Salesforce. He is currently promoting his cloud-native, Azure-based Veeam Data Cloud (VDC), which covers M365 and Azure.
CEO Anand Eswaran said in a statement: “As the world's number one provider of data protection and ransomware recovery and the leader in backup for Microsoft 365, we bring these trusted capabilities to Microsoft 365 and Microsoft Azure, and we deliver them by: service.”
The realm of SaaS protection is rapidly expanding. You can also mention Asigra. Commvault Cloud powered by Metal. Dhruva. Haikyu; Keep It; OwnBackup in partnership with Cohesity. etc.
There are basically two approaches. The first is if, similar to Veeam, his supplier creates his own connector software that links to his SaaS applications, focusing on the most popular SaaS apps in the customer area, such as M365. . Second, it is recommended that the SaaS application supplier herself or her customers build (or have) connectors built to link their SaaS applications to their secure suppliers. Asigra and HYCU exemplify this approach, stating that HYCU offers customers her GenAI-based connector building capabilities, allowing them to more broadly cover the large number of available SaaS apps.
VDCs use Azure Blob Storage to hold backups. All-in-one service that includes backup software, infrastructure, and storage. Backups are continuously versioned and maintained, and VDCs are built using zero trust ideas.
Veeam offers VDC for Microsoft 365 as a service, building on the existing Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 to provide backup and recovery for Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, OneDrive for Business, and Teams. VDC for Azure is a fully hosted, preconfigured backup service that provides backup and recovery for Azure VMs, Azure SQL, and Azure Files. It has customizable recovery point objectives (RPO) and recovery time objectives (RTO).
We asked Veeam how Veeam Backup for Salesforce fits in with VDCs. Rick Vanover, senior director of product strategy at Veeam, said: “There are many opportunities to extend Veeam Data Cloud to other Veeam products. There is strong demand for the services currently offered and more is planned.”
B&F expects that its Azure-based SaaS apps will be protected and that VDCs can potentially extend to AWS and Google Cloud. Customers can choose to use individual best-in-class SaaS app protection products such as Keeit or OwnBackup, or extend the coverage of their existing comprehensive backup supplier to the realm of her SaaS apps. His top-class SaaS app protection products have built a lead over incumbents, and now he's trying to ride their speed to compete.
VDC is available now.
