The Ministry of Economy reported on March 3 that it had signed an agreement with US tech company Palantir to use artificial intelligence in humanitarian demining efforts in Ukraine.
More than 270 Ukrainians, including 14 children, have been killed by landmines and other explosives since the invasion began in earnest.
Economy Minister Yulia Sviridenko said at the agreement signing ceremony in London: “Demining is the zero stage of Ukraine's recovery. Currently, 156,000 square kilometers of land is potentially contaminated and more than 6 million Ukrainians are at risk. “They are exposed to it,” he said.
Since the start of the full-scale invasion, deminers have neutralized more than 470,000 explosive devices and cleared more than 1,170 square kilometers of land, said Serhiy Leva, head of the State Emergency Service's humanitarian demining department. It is said that it has been removed.
However, clearing the land is a large-scale operation that takes many years.
“The ability to accelerate the demining process, especially through cooperation with technology companies like Palantir, is an opportunity to save lives and accelerate Ukraine's recovery,” Sviridenko said.
According to a press release from the Ministry of Economy, the agreement includes the digitization of demining operations and the automation of processes already outlined in Ukraine's National Mine Action Strategy until 2033.
This includes expanded digital capabilities to assess and prioritize risks in mined areas, as well as the use of Palantir's artificial intelligence platform assistants for decision-making in demining operations. .
The platform will draw on information as well as previous activities of local authorities, municipalities, ministries and deminers.
Based on this data, the platform informs deminers about the most effective measures to take when working in a particular area, such as whether to use drones or more traditional demining methods. I can advise you on this. Â
According to the Ministry of Economy, the main goal is to “demine territory more quickly and at lower cost.”
