Veterinarians at the Omaha Zoo and Aquarium in Nebraska, US, were surprised to find a “metallic foreign object” in the stomach of one of its most popular animals, a rare white American crocodile named Thibodeau. Veterinarians made the discovery during routine checks on 10 crocodiles at the zoo. This prompted veterinarians to operate on the 36-year-old crocodile to remove the metal object before it caused health problems. During the operation, it was discovered that the crocodile had ingested more than 70 coins, presumably thrown into its enclosure by visitors.
Christina Ploeg, the zoo's associate veterinarian who conducted the operation, said of the complex surgical procedure: A plastic pipe was installed to protect his mouth and safely pass the tools used to access the coins, including the camera that helped guide the recovery of these items. ”
After the procedure, veterinarians had Thibodeau x-rayed to ensure all metal objects had been removed. The crocodile made a quick recovery and was returned to its enclosure at the zoo.
Recently, the Omaha Zoo & Aquarium shared a photo of a coin removed from an alligator on Instagram, reminding visitors not to toss coins into the animals or the zoo's enclosures, as the coin has a wish on it. I called out.
In response to the post, one Instagram user wrote: “The fact that we have to tell people not to throw coins or objects into animal enclosures shows how little common sense people have. Zoos are not for people who don't respect animals or nature. Maybe not.”
One person said: Zoos must have staff to remind visitors not to turn on flashlights or throw objects into the zoo. It happens quite often every time we go. ”
Another person said, “When I looked at this exhibit and saw this animal, I saw a coin on its back. I was so angry that people would do that. , I think you think it's ok to do that because you want to make sure that the animal is real and alive, so you flip a coin to see if it reacts, and if you ingest it or not. You don’t think about what might happen if you eat it. Someone throws a coin at you and you get hurt.”
