As the 2024 Lok Sabha elections are underway, a video of a green polling booth in Tirupattur district of Tamil Nadu has grabbed the internet's attention. A video shared by IAS officer Supriya Sahu on X shows a polling booth made of coconut and bamboo leaves.
In his post, IAS Sahu shared that around 10 such green booths have been set up across the state in view of the rising temperature. The entrances to these polling stations are lined with bananas and palm leaves, while the signs are made of hand-painted cloth banners.
Sharing the video, IAS Sahu said, “This is a green polling booth in Tirupattur district of TN, set up by the district collector along with young green comrades working under TN Climate Change Mission. About 10 booths have been set up across the state. Coconut and bamboo leaves will be used as shade to beat the heat. Banana and palm leaves will welcome voters. They were made with hand-painted cloth banners, avoiding plastic. These were also plastic-free, disposable booths.

The video, which was shared on April 19, has gained attention online and received praise from social media users. In response, one user commented, “It's worth imitating.” It's a great initiative. ” Another user wrote, “Well done…looks great and served its purpose.”
“Yes, to save the world, we need to universalize green concepts like this in our daily lives. Thank you for all your hard work,” a third user wrote.
On March 16, the Election Commission of India (ECI) announced the 18th Lok Sabha and general elections in four states – Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Odisha and Sikkim. The parliamentary elections will be held in seven stages from April to May, with over 90 billion eligible citizens voting for 543 seats in the House of Representatives. Results will be announced on June 4th.
